The process or technique used to transmit data from one computer to another via the internet is known as Internet Protocol (IP). Every computer on the internet, referred to as a host, has at least one IP address that distinguishes it from every other computer there.
The main set of guidelines that control how data is sent over the internet is known as IP, or Internet Protocol. It is in charge of directing data packets across networks and among various networked devices.
Each device connected to a computer network that employs the Internet Protocol is given a specific numerical label known as an IP address. It performs two key tasks: locating the host inside the network and identifying the host or network interface.
Devices are often given IP addresses by a network administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). IPv4 and IPv6 are the two types of IP addresses. Four octets separated by periods make up the standard structure for 32-bit IPv4 addresses (e.g., 192.168.1.1). In the structure of eight groups of four hexadecimal digits separated by colons, IPv6 addresses are 128-bit values (e.g., 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334).
IP addresses, which carry location information and make devices reachable for communication, are essentially the identifier that permits information to be exchanged between devices on a network. There must be a means for computers, routers, and webpages to be distinguished on the internet.
